In Uganda, they are many vulnerable producer groups and other consumers that are sympathetic with the Fair Trade principles. In September 2008 a few of them organized themselves and formed an umbrella organization called Uganda Federation for Alternative Trade (UGAFAT).
Uganda Federation for Alternative Trade (UGAFAT) was established with the help of Cooperation of Fair Trade in Africa (COFTA) in a workshop that was held on the 2nd September 2008. 43 members were in attendance. The organization is fully registered as a company limited by guarantee. The aim of the organization is to mobilize vulnerable Fair Trade producers and consumers in order to promote the principles of Fair Trade within the Ugandan context, and use it as a platform for advocacy on issues such as production and marketing of products within and outside of the country.
The World Fair Trade Day presented a good opportunity to members to renew their commitment. They reflected on the achievements and challenges met during the past year regarding Fair Trade principles and activities. It was used as a great opportunity to mobilize other producers and consumers as well as strategize for the future especially in view of the world economic recession.
