Profile The Bombolulu Workshop for the Handicapped was founded in 1969 with the aim of providing training opportunities and sheltered employment to men and women with physical disabilities who are from disadvantaged families.
Bombolulu Workshops is one of the projects of the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya, the association has 8 branches country wide located in Busia, Kisumu, Embu, Nairobi, Kakamega, Machakos, Nakuru, Kisii.
The Mission and Vision of the organizations is to enable persons with disabilities to overcome their physical limitations and empower them economically and socially to become self reliant and fully integrated members of their communities.
Goals and objectives of Bombolulu is to reach out to many other persons with disability through opportunities of employment and develop market led products of high quality with the Fair Trade environment.
Since its existence the project has trained over 500 physically handicapped, blind and deaf persons in tailoring, jewellery making, leather work and woodcarving, and most of them have been reintegrated into their society. The project currently employs on a permanent basis 134 persons most of them being physically handicapped. In addition, 50-80 persons are usually engaged as casual labourers.
The project produces high quality crafts e.g. jewellery made of locally available raw materials as well as semi previous stones, fashion wear made of Kenyan cotton and hand printed for local and export markets, leather products such as shoes, belts, canvas bags and woodcarvings which include unique designs made from sustainable hardwood from plantations. The export market has built a rich history over the years exporting to over 20 countries worldwide.
The local market contributes to about 40% of the total sales; the main outlet is their showroom located within the project and sales made in the hotels.
Since 1968, the artisans have clearly demonstrated the ability to combat poverty through the creation and trading in handicrafts. |
