Hand made papers of Africa (Mapepa) was started in 1991 to introduce paper technology as an alternative medium for manufacture of Arts and Crafts using paper and pulp processed by using sustainable organic village concepts to create self sufficiency and Afri-culture productivity.

Mapepa presents a unique range of paper products created by village people in the African Republic of Zimbabwe. The objective of the organization is to promote and support small-scale paper production through community based projects spread 1throughout the country. Master paper makers train villagers in the ancient art of papermaking using simple equipment which is donated by the organization. This fledgling new industry has given hope to hundreds of people, mainly women with young families. They are trained to make paper using indigenous plant fibers that grow wild around their home.

Since 1991 Mapepa has established and expanded the Industry with a true spirit of socially and environmentally responsible entrepreneurship. Growing into rural districts and high density suburbs schools , rehabilitation centers , supplying skills to Street kids organizations of Zimbabwe and other countries in the region working with young, old men and women, Eco- artists, scientists, universities industrialists , environmentalists , farmers all working together for a Greener Africa.

No chemicals or imported inputs are necessary, designers produce unique hand made Paper of archival quality and African innovative products such as Paper furniture, Wall paper, lamp shades wall hangings Vases, bins. Picture frames, candles, place mats, towels among others
Mapepa continues to expand into new markets regionally and on every continent practicing Fair Trade principles and supplying Fair Trade markets around the whole world.

Mapepa is today capable of producing over one ton of hand made paper for the printing packaging, arts and crafts industries , book binding , conference ranges , corporate gifts , cards and stationery expanding into new generation paper and paper products every year.

Mapepa is a catalyst in the art of hand paper making embracing self sufficiency, employment creation and promoting people who are working together hand in hand in Africa with the environments to support each other for a better future for all.
