Profile
The United church of Northern India founded Eastleigh Community Centre in 1959. This was under the leadership of Reverend Din Dayal, so as to cater for the destitute Asians who then lived in the area. The centre was taken over by Presbyterian Church in 1968 to support the evangelical and social responsibility work of the church. Over the years, Eastleigh Community Centre has been working towards making the living conditions of the slum dwellers better. This is through creating various social, political, economic and spiritual interventions. The centre identifies critical issues that concern Mathare and Eastleigh communities and translate them into short and long-term programmes. The church has achieved a lot and today Eastleigh Community Centre is larger with multiplicity of activities.

The centre focus on child based community development. This is done through both institutional and community based programmes. The centre holistic development approach revolves around education and learning, vocational trainings, community development and enterprise development,
Mathare and Eastleigh areas hosts about 600,000 unfortunate slum dwellers, who live in shanties and unhygienic conditions of which majority are children and women. The area also hosts political and economic refugees from Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia and other parts of Africa. The environmental conditions of the area are deplorable and most social services are unavailable. Diseases are rampant and have severe socio-economic effect to the people.

The mission of Eastleigh Community Centre is to ensure sustainable livelihood for communities living in Mathare and Eastleigh so as to live responsibly and with dignity through capacity enhancement in Christian based approaches.

The group has various programmes such as Primary &nursery school, vocational training, hair dressing & beauty, dress making & tailoring, pottery project and community development.

The pottery project was started in the 70's.It employs both men and women who are trained on the job and are able to produce stoneware pottery, which is in great demand in the local and international markets. They have participated in various handcraft exhibitions to sell the products and supply some to big hotels. The items are also sold in other countries in Europe and U.S.A. Training of local youths in this skill is also an activity of the department
The centre works with children, youth and women. The main aim is to facilitate an empowerment process aimed at helping them realise their potentials
.
